How do I find a reliable tax adviser for my tax return, and how much does it cost?
You can work with a Steuerberater (tax adviser), a Steuerkanzlei (tax firm) or, if you're only on a salary, a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein. Fees vary a lot with the work involved. Ask for a written contract before you hand over your documents.
For your tax return (Steuererklärung) you can go to a Steuerberater or a Steuerkanzlei. If you're only on a salary, you can join a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein (wage tax help association) for a yearly membership fee. For simple cases there are also apps such as Taxfix.
Fees depend a lot on how much work is involved. Ongoing support can cost about 150 euros a month. Get quotes from a few places.
Do not share sensitive tax documents with anyone until you have a written contract or proof of membership.
Check that the person is qualified: a Steuerberater must be registered with the Steuerberaterkammer (the professional chamber).
