What should I look out for when taking out legal expenses insurance (Rechtsschutzversicherung)?

When you choose a policy, check which areas are covered, such as work, renting or traffic. Also check whether there is a waiting period and whether the insurer helps you find a lawyer.
The insurer may ask you to find a lawyer in Berlin yourself first and get them approved. With one digital insurer, a policy could not be used at all for an employment contract problem, because no lawyer could be found.
