How can I save on electricity, heating and everyday costs?
Comparing electricity and gas providers, heating and airing correctly, and checking your service charge statement save the most. Berlin also offers discounted public transport and free energy advice for people on a low income.
Electricity and gas: If you don't choose a provider yourself when you move, you may end up on the expensive basic tariff (Grundversorgung). Compare prices on comparison sites, and avoid long contracts and paying in advance. Set your monthly instalments to match your actual use so there is no big bill at the end of the year.
Heating and airing: Keep the living room at around 20 degrees; every degree less lowers heating costs. Instead of leaving the window tilted all the time, open it fully for 5-10 minutes a few times a day (Stoßlüften); this saves energy and prevents mould. Don't block radiators with furniture.
Service charge statement (Nebenkostenabrechnung): Check your landlord's annual statement; mistakes are common. You have one year to object. Tenants' associations (Mieterverein) help members check it.
Berlin discounts: People receiving Jobcenter support, social assistance or similar benefits can get a discounted public transport pass (Berlin-Ticket S) and cultural or sports discounts with the berlinpass. They can also apply for exemption from the broadcasting fee (Rundfunkbeitrag).
Advice: The Verbraucherzentrale Berlin offers energy advice, free for people on a low income. If you cannot pay your electricity or gas bill, talk to the provider about instalments before you are cut off, and contact a debt counselling service (Schuldnerberatung).
