How do I get a certificate of good conduct (Führungszeugnis), and how long does it take?
You can apply online with a card that has the electronic ID function, or at the Bürgeramt with an appointment. It usually arrives in 2 days to 1 week, though you may be told a longer time when you apply.
If you have a card with the electronic ID function, such as your residence card, you can apply online on the Bundesamt für Justiz website. You can choose to have the certificate sent straight to an institution, for example your employer.
If you cannot do it online, book an appointment at the Bürgeramt and apply there. Walk-ins have been accepted, but this is not guaranteed.
The certificate usually arrives in 2 days to 1 week. When you apply, you may still be told 2-6 weeks.
Employers and some institutions ask for this certificate, so apply early if you will need it.
