My partner is a German citizen and we're getting married in Turkey. Where do we get the certificate of no impediment?
The German partner's certificate of no impediment (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) is issued by the Standesamt at their place of residence in Germany. German missions in Turkey don't issue it. Start weeks ahead because of postal times.
To marry in Turkey, the German partner needs a certificate of no impediment to marriage (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis, a document showing there is no obstacle to the marriage).
This certificate is issued by the Standesamt (registry office) at the German partner's place of residence in Germany. The German embassy and consulates in Turkey don't issue it.
The German Embassy's website has an application form. According to the page, the required documents include proof of descent, citizenship, residence and marital status for the German partner, and for the Turkish partner an international birth record with an apostille from the civil registry office, among others. Ask the Standesamt for the exact list.
Because the process runs by post, it can take a long time. Start weeks before the wedding date.
The Turkish partner's own documents are a matter for the Turkish authorities; ask the Turkish consulate or the civil registry office about them.
