Can I change the purpose of my residence permit, for example from student to worker? (Zweckwechsel)

What it is: Every residence permit is granted for a specific purpose (study, Ausbildung, work, family). If your purpose changes (for example you finish university and start a job), you need to change your permit to match. This is called a change of purpose (Zweckwechsel).

General rule: Since the law changes in 2020 and 2023, most switches can be made without leaving Germany. For example, if you find a qualified job while studying, you can switch to a work permit or an EU Blue Card; you do not always have to finish your degree first.

Restrictions: As a student you cannot switch to a permit for short-term or unskilled work. Switching from some permits, such as a language course permit, is limited. You must meet all requirements of the new permit (for example degree recognition, salary and, if needed, approval from the Federal Employment Agency).

Timing: Apply before your current permit expires. Once you apply, you receive a provisional document (Fiktionsbescheinigung) until the decision and can legally stay. Ask the LEA when you can start the new job; often you should not start before approval.
