Can I apply for citizenship a few months before my 5 years are up?
Yes, applying online a few weeks to two months before you reach 5 years is usually not a problem: processing takes long, and the time is completed in the meantime. Uploading all your documents at the start speeds things up.
In Berlin you now apply for citizenship (Einbürgerung) online. An application made two months before reaching 5 years has gone through without problems, because the time is completed anyway while it is processed.
Upload all your documents at the start. If they are complete and you fully meet the requirements, the decision can come within a few months. Under the old system it could take 1.5 to 4 years.
There is no known downside to applying early. Thinking of applying even earlier, such as 4-5 months ahead? Check on the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA) website or with an advice centre first.
