Can I work more than 20 hours a week on a student visa?

Not during the semester: on a student permit you can only work part-time, and this limit cannot be extended. You can work full-time during the breaks, but there is a yearly quota for that too. To work more, you may need to change your permit type.

The state's view is that you came here to study and work comes second. That is why your working hours are limited on a student permit.

During semester breaks you can work full-time, but there is a yearly quota for this too. Track your hours and do not go over it, or your permit could run into problems.

If you have a job offer and want to work more, ask the Ausländerbehörde whether you can change your permit type. The LEA can advise you on this.

If you came for a language course and have finished it, your situation may be different. Check the work note (Nebenbestimmung) on your residence card and ask the LEA.
