Who can get housing benefit (Wohngeld), and how do I apply?
Wohngeld is rent support for tenants on a low income who do not receive Jobcenter support. In Berlin you apply online or in writing to your district's Wohngeld office; you can estimate the amount first with the Wohngeldrechner.
What it is: Wohngeld is state rent support for low- and middle-income households that struggle to pay their rent (there is also a Lastenzuschuss for homeowners). The federal government and Berlin pay half each. If you are eligible but do not apply, the money will not come automatically.
Who can get it: Households with their main residence in Berlin that have their own income, but not enough for the rent. People receiving basic income support from the Jobcenter (Grundsicherung) or social assistance cannot get Wohngeld, because their rent is already covered there. Most students receiving BAföG cannot get it either. Foreign nationals can apply with a valid residence permit.
How much: The amount depends on household size, income and rent. You can get a non-binding estimate in advance with the Berlin Senate's Wohngeldrechner. Wohngeld is usually granted for 12 months; then you need to apply again.
Applying: You apply to the Wohngeld office (Wohngeldstelle) of your district, online via the Service-Portal Berlin or by post. You need your rental contract, recent rent payments, proof of income and your ID or residence documents. Wohngeld is paid from the month you apply, so apply early even if documents are still missing.
Effect on residence status: How Wohngeld affects your residence permit depends on your situation. We explain this in a separate question; ask a migration counselling centre before applying. Children of Wohngeld recipients can also use the Education and Participation Package (BuT).
