Can I rent a flat in Berlin while I'm still in Turkey, before I come to Germany?
Yes. You can rent a flat before you arrive through sites such as Wunderflats or HousingAnywhere. Always check whether the listing says Anmeldung (address registration) is possible.
Wunderflats is the site recommended most often. Listings say whether Anmeldung is possible, how many people the flat suits and whether pets are allowed. Once the contract is signed, the site charges a fee, which can be about 300 euros.
HousingAnywhere is used too. Always read the reviews on the landlord's profile there.
For a long-term flat, look at ImmoScout24, Immowelt and Kleinanzeigen.
If you are coming with a child, a separate room for the child is usually enough, and usually nobody comes to inspect the flat. Family reunification may have a minimum living space rule, though, so confirm this with the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office).
Once you arrive, you must do your Anmeldung.
Getting the deposit back can be difficult. Photograph the flat's condition when you move in and out, and ask for a written handover record.
