My residence permit is expiring. What should I do?
Apply to the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA) for an extension before it expires. If you apply in time, your permit counts as valid until a decision is made.
In Berlin, residence permits are issued by the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA, formerly the Ausländerbehörde). Make sure you apply for the extension before your permit expires.
If you applied before it expired, your permit counts as valid until a decision is made. You may be given a Fiktionsbescheinigung for this; keep it for work and travel.
If you can't get an appointment, you can also apply in writing using the forms on the LEA website. It's important that you can prove the date you applied.
