Does receiving Wohngeld, Kindergeld or Bürgergeld affect my residence permit or citizenship application?
Kindergeld, Elterngeld, Kinderzuschlag and Unterhaltsvorschuss do not harm your residence status. Bürgergeld (now called Grundsicherung) can cause problems for extensions, settlement permits and citizenship; Wohngeld depends on your situation.
The rule: For a residence permit you generally have to support yourself without relying on «public funds» (Residence Act § 2(3)). But the law excludes certain family benefits from this.
No problem: Child benefit (Kindergeld), child supplement (Kinderzuschlag), parental allowance (Elterngeld), maintenance advance (Unterhaltsvorschuss), BAföG and benefits based on contributions you paid yourself (for example unemployment benefit ALG I). If you are entitled to them, you can claim them with peace of mind.
Possible problems: Basic income support from the Jobcenter (since July 2026 Grundsicherung, previously Bürgergeld) and social assistance (Sozialhilfe). These can count against you when extending your permit, applying for a settlement permit or for citizenship. There are exceptions for some permits (for example humanitarian permits or certain family situations).
Wohngeld: It depends. If you would not need Jobcenter support even without Wohngeld, it is usually not a problem. But if Wohngeld is the only thing keeping you from needing the Jobcenter, the LEA may consider that your livelihood is not secured. So get advice before applying.
Tip: Don't turn down support you are entitled to based on general things you have heard from others; but before applying, show your type of permit to a free migration counselling service (for example mbeon or the Willkommenszentrum Berlin) and ask.
