How do I get care support (Pflegegrad) for an elderly relative or a relative who needs care?

You apply to the care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) of the person needing care; the Medizinischer Dienst assesses them at home and sets a care level from 1 to 5. Berlin's Pflegestützpunkte offer free advice: 0800 59 500 59.

Who applies: The person who needs care (or an authorised relative on their behalf) applies to the care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) where they are insured in Germany. The Pflegekasse is part of the Krankenkasse. You can start the application by phone; the care level applies from the date of application, so apply early.

Assessment: The Pflegekasse commissions the Medizinischer Dienst (for privately insured people, Medicproof). An assessor visits the home and scores how independent the person is in daily life across six areas. Based on the result, a care level (Pflegegrad) from 1 to 5 is assigned. It is important that the relative providing care is present at the visit and that medical reports are ready. The decision usually comes within 25 working days.

Support: Care allowance (Pflegegeld) if the family provides care, care services (Pflegesachleistung) if a professional service comes, day care, costs of adapting the home, and care supplies. The amounts depend on the care level.

For relatives providing care: In a sudden care situation you can take up to 10 working days off work and apply to the Pflegekasse for care support pay for that time. Longer care leave options also exist.

Free advice: Berlin's 36 care advice centres (Pflegestützpunkte) offer free, independent support, from the application to choosing a care service: 0800 59 500 59. Note: Care insurance benefits are for people insured in Germany; they do not apply to relatives living in Turkey.
