Which health insurance is better: TK, AOK, Barmer or a private insurer?

Statutory insurers handle things like the HPV vaccine differently. After your studies, Mawista ExpatCare can be cheaper than TK, but once you earn more your employer may not accept expat insurance such as Care Concept. For private cover, look at ARAG, Signal Iduna and Ottonova.

TK (Techniker Krankenkasse) can refund HPV vaccine invoices within 1-1.5 weeks if you send a negative test result. But it may not cover the vaccine if you are over 25.

AOK can cover the HPV vaccine at the pharmacy, but sometimes pays for only one dose.

Barmer can cover all three HPV vaccine doses without a test if you are under 25. It is also recommended for employees. You can have your AT/11 form approved at Barmer too.

After your studies or while you look for a job, the private expat insurer Mawista ExpatCare can be much cheaper than TK. To leave TK, you need to prove you have other insurance.

If you are thinking of Care Concept as a cheap private option, be careful. Once your salary is above the minijob limit, your employer may not accept private expat insurance. You may then have to switch to TK after all.

ARAG can make a comprehensive private offer, but it is not cheap. Such an offer can cost about 750 euros a month, with half paid by the employer.

Signal Iduna refunds part of the premium for years in which you do not use it. It once covered pregnancy and birth costs at a private hospital in Turkey. Get a quote before you decide.

Another private option is Ottonova.
