Is there a penalty for streaming or downloading series and films online in Germany?

Yes. Copyright is strictly protected in Germany. Downloading or sharing via torrent in particular can lead to a lawyer's warning letter (Abmahnung) and high fees. Legal platforms are the safest option.

Torrent programs are the riskiest option, because while you download a series or film you are also sharing the file with others. Rights holders' lawyers find you through your IP address and send a warning letter (Abmahnung). These letters can ask for hundreds of euros.

Some people say that just watching (streaming) on illegal sites is tracked less. It is still not legal. Some apps share files in the background, which makes them especially risky.

If you get an Abmahnung, do not pay straight away and do not sign anything. Get advice from a lawyer or the Verbraucherzentrale first.

For series and films, use streaming services or the TV channels' own apps.
