How much is the dog tax (Hundesteuer) in Berlin and how do I register?
In Berlin, dog tax is €120 a year for the first dog and €180 for each additional dog. Registering your dog online in the dog register also registers it for the tax.
How much: In Berlin you pay €120 a year for the first dog and €180 a year for the second and each additional dog. The amount doesn't depend on the breed or size of the dog.
How to register: You must register within one month of getting your dog. There are two ways:
- Dog register (Hunderegister): Registering your dog online in the register also registers it for the tax. Since registration is compulsory anyway, this is the easiest way.
- Tax office (Finanzamt): You can also register directly with the tax office via ELSTER or by sending the form by post. In that case you still need to register in the dog register separately.
Tax tag: After you register, the tax office posts you a tax tag (Hundesteuermarke). Your dog must wear it on its collar or harness outdoors.
Exemptions: Exemption from the tax is possible in some cases, such as guide and assistance dogs. You need to apply for it separately.
The tax notice may arrive late: The tax notice (Steuerbescheid) sometimes arrives months after you register and charges the full tax from the date you got the dog. Set that money aside.
