Is health insurance compulsory in Germany?
Yes. Everyone living in Germany must have health insurance.
Health insurance is compulsory in Germany. Most employees are in statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung); contributions are deducted from your salary automatically and your employer pays a share too.
You can choose your own fund, such as AOK, TK or Barmer. Their services are largely the same, but it can be worth comparing the extras.
If you receive support from the Jobcenter, your insurance is usually covered through the Jobcenter. If your spouse is insured and you have no or low income of your own, family insurance (Familienversicherung) may be possible.
