Where can I get tested for sexually transmitted infections for free and anonymously?
At Berlin's sexual health centres (Zentrum für sexuelle Gesundheit), counselling is free and tests can be done anonymously. If you are insured, your gynaecologist or GP can also test you.
Sexual health centres: The «Zentrum für sexuelle Gesundheit und Familienplanung» centres, run by Berlin's district health offices, offer counselling and testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Counselling is free, and you can go without giving your name (anonymously). It does not matter which district you live in.
Cost: An anonymous HIV test costs 10 euros and is free for people on a low income. Other STI tests and treatment are mainly for people without health insurance. You usually need to book by phone first; the STI line of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf centre is 030 9029 16887.
If you are insured: If you have symptoms or have had a risky situation, go to your gynaecologist (Frauenarzt), GP or a dermatologist; your insurance covers the necessary tests. Women up to age 25 can have a free chlamydia test once a year.
Other services: These centres also cover contraception costs for people on a low income, offer pregnancy counselling and provide the counselling certificate (Beratungsschein) for unwanted pregnancies. Some centres have consultation hours in Turkish; ask by phone.
Confidentiality: Doctors and counsellors are bound by confidentiality. Your test results are not passed on to your family, employer or the immigration office.
