I damaged something in my rented flat. How does liability insurance pay?

Report the damage to your landlord and your insurer. The insurer usually asks for quotes (Angebot) from several companies and pays if it approves. For damage in a rented flat, Mietsachschäden cover is important.

First report the damage to the property management and your insurer.

If the housing company doesn't have its own contractor, it may ask you to get a quote (Angebot) for the repair. The insurer usually wants more than one quote; if it accepts, it pays, and you have the repair done with that money. The housing company approves the quote too.

This insurance is Privathaftpflichtversicherung (personal liability insurance). Check whether your policy includes Mietsachschäden cover for damage to things in a rented home.

Landlords shouldn't actually claim for normal wear and tear (for example light marks on the floor). If they still do, this insurance can help.
