My recognition was only partial. What is a compensation measure (Ausgleichsmaßnahme)?
Partial recognition means your training has gaps compared to the German equivalent. You can close these gaps with an adaptation course or an exam and then get full recognition.
What partial recognition means: The recognition decision (Bescheid) lists the significant differences between your training and the equivalent German profession. Once you close these gaps, you get full recognition. The decision also states which compensation routes are possible; read it carefully.
Adaptation course (Anpassungslehrgang or Anpassungsqualifizierung): For a set period, usually at a workplace and a training centre, you learn the missing content. At the end there is usually an assessment.
Exam (Kenntnisprüfung or Eignungsprüfung): You show your knowledge of the missing areas in an exam. This is common in health professions (such as doctors and nurses). There are preparation courses for these exams.
Residence: People who want to come to Germany for this process can get a residence permit for recognition (§ 16d AufenthG), which also allows you to work to a certain extent during the process. If you are already in Germany, you can complete the measure with your current permit.
Funding: For course and exam costs you can get an education voucher (Bildungsgutschein) from the Arbeitsagentur (this also applies if you receive Jobcenter support), support from IQ Network programmes or a recognition grant. The IQ recognition counselling centres in Berlin explain suitable courses and funding free of charge.
