Can I do a master's while living here on a family reunification permit?

Yes, you can study and work on a family reunification permit; you don't need to switch to a student permit. Your permit doesn't change because you're studying. Depending on your spouse's situation, you may also be able to get BAföG.

With a family reunification permit (Familiennachzug) you can enrol at a university and study. This permit also allows you to work; the 140-day limit of the student permit doesn't apply to you. You don't need to switch to a student permit or open a blocked account.

Is your permit affected? It doesn't change because you're studying. It's still tied to your marriage and living together as a family. After your marriage has lasted at least 3 years in Germany, your permit can become independent of your spouse.

BAföG: If your spouse has a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), you can get BAföG with your family reunification permit. If your spouse has a temporary permit, BAföG may be possible if you've lived legally in Germany without interruption for at least 15 months. You must start your master's before turning 45.

Tuition: In states that charge tuition to students from outside the EU, such as Baden-Württemberg, people who came to Germany to live with their family rather than to study are often exempt. Ask the university.

If you have children: Many universities have childcare places, flexible exam arrangements and an advice service for student parents. Studying part-time is also an option.
