What is Elterngeld, can I get it as a foreign national, and how much is it?

Elterngeld (parental allowance) is paid to parents who take a break from work to care for their baby. If your residence permit allows you to work, you can usually get it; it is between 300 and 1,800 euros a month.

What it is: Elterngeld (parental allowance) is state support for mothers and fathers who work less or not at all after the birth in order to care for their baby. Even if you did not work before the birth, you can get the minimum amount.

Foreign nationals: If you have a settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), an EU Blue Card or a residence permit that allows you to work, you are usually eligible. Some permit types (for example study-only permits or certain humanitarian permits) have additional conditions or exclusions. Ask your parental allowance office (Elterngeldstelle) about your situation.

How much: Basiselterngeld is about 65 to 67 percent of your net income before the birth, at least 300 euros and at most 1,800 euros. With ElterngeldPlus the monthly amount is half, but you receive it for twice as long; it suits people working part-time. The Elterngeld calculator (Elterngeldrechner) gives you an estimate.

How long: One parent can receive Basiselterngeld for up to 12 months. If the other parent takes at least two months as well, the total goes up to 14 months. Both parents can receive Basiselterngeld at the same time for at most one month. If you are a single parent, you can receive all 14 months.

Income limit: If the couple's taxable annual income exceeds 175,000 euros, there is no Elterngeld.

Applying: You apply after the birth. Payment is made retroactively for at most three months, so do not wait. In Berlin you apply to the Elterngeldstelle of your district (Bezirk); many districts also accept online applications.
